Interview with Gilian Schout

April 3, 2019 /

from Untrecht University, Netherlands

From 3rd to 20th March 2019 Gilian Schout from Utrecht University, Netherlands, was our SFB 1313 guest. Wietse Boon, postdoctoral researcher related to project area A, had the great pleasure to interview him about his stay and his research aims. Find the audio interview below!

About Gilian Schout
Gilian Schout is in the 4th year of his PhD at the Utrecht University. His PhD promotors are Prof. Majid Hassanizadeh at the Hydrogeology group – one of SFB 1313's external partners – and Prof. Jasper Griffioen at the Environmental Sciences group. He is also supervised by Dr. Niels Hartog at KWR Watercycle Research Institute in Nieuwegein, the Netherlands.

For his PhD he studies the impacts of oil and gas production on groundwater quality, using both field-based and numerical methods. The latter is the aim of his visit to Stuttgart, to work on numerical simulation of a two phase multicomponent system (water and natural gas) using DuMux. For this same reason he visited Rainer Helmig’s group for a couple of weeks back in October 2017 as well, which turned out to be a very productive and enjoyable time for him.

In 2012 he graduated from the Master’s program Hydrology at Utrecht University, with a focus on hydrogeology. After graduating and before starting his PhD he worked for 2.5 years for the Water Services department of Schlumberger Oilfield Services, based in Doha, Qatar. There he was involved in various groundwater management projects in the Gulf region, ranging from wellfield rehabilitation, aquifer storage and recovery, and reinjection of treated sewage effluent in deep aquifers.
