Former SFB 1313 researcher Xu Chu from the Institute of Aerospace Thermodynamics (University of Stuttgart) will give his habilitation colloquium talk on "Data-driven causal analysis in fluid mechanics" on 30 January 2025. The joint habilitation committee of SC SimTech and Faculty 6 cordially invites to this event.
Talk: Data-driven causal analysis in fluid mechanics
Speaker. Dr.-Ing. Xu Chu, University of Stuttgart
Date: 30 January 2025
Time: 9 am
Venue: Campus Vaihingen, Pfaffenwaldring 7, 70569 Stuttgart, Faculty room of the Faculty 2
Abstract
Causal inference is pivotal for scientific discovery, yet the fluid mechanics community has primarily relied on intervention-based approaches (e.g., controlled experiments). This colloquium introduces data-driven causal inference, as a powerful new tool within AI4Fluids 2.0. Moving beyond correlation, this framework pinpoints dominant flow mechanisms, guides sensor placement, and refines modeling strategies. We then show how differentiable fluid dynamics seamlessly integrates classical CFD and machine learning. Finally, we explore the potential of agentic AI in CFD.
